Principle Members

Nicholas Whitaker
Director - Editor

Nicholas Whitaker was born to be a film director. With little to do growing up in rural Pennsylvania -- movies on VHS were a lifeline to the rest of the world. His passion for making films grew after making his first movie at age 12. As an adult, Nick moved to New York to study film, enrolling at The New School University for undergraduate film. In 2008, Nicholas received a Masters Degree in Media Culture and Communication from New York University. It was here that he became passionately involved in media literacy – recognizing the power of the media to affect social change.

Nicholas Whitaker has worked in various areas of the New York film production industry including: Hungry Man, Snap Films, Trio Films, Double Wide Media, UVphactory, and Lankford Films, among others. He also worked as a local news editor for CBS, NBC and FOX, and a freelance editor for BET. In 2005, Nicholas left the corporate media world to work in advocacy as a filmmaker and director for streetfilms.org, where in just two years he was able to reach tens of thousands of viewers with the dozens of short documentaries on livable streets. In 2008, he formed AmbientLight Films with Executive Producer Richard James to develop and produce issue and advocacy films of a broader nature. In the past three years Nicholas has produced and directed projects for companies such as Google, NAB, Starwood Hotels and many projects for the NYC DOT through Meadow St. Films with his partner Richard James

Nicholas feels strongly that the job of a film director is to provide every opportunity for the viewer to come to their own conclusions and give them a path to form their own opinions. It is with this ethos that his writing and directing will bring fresh and insight to documentaries that reflect the pressing issues facing our world today.

Richard James
Executive Producer

Richard James has been “creating” his whole life. First as a child actor, later as an advertising creative director, and now as an Executive Producer, this veteran of entertainment, media, and advertising has worked hard to pursue a vision of “push-the-limits” creative in everything from advertising and photography to filmmaking and advocacy.

His career began with a Communications degree from the New York Institute of Technology. During the course of a 27-year career Richard has worked as a copywriter, art director, creative director and producer. He’s been associated with or worked for companies like: J. Walter Thompson, United Artists, EUE/Screen Gems, ABC-TV, HBO, and Chiat/Day. In 2008, Richard combined with filmmaker Nicholas Whitaker to found AmbientLight Films, a non-profit corporation formed to develop and produce issue and advocacy films.

Richard’s other accomplishments include, that of speechwriter for CEO of Volvo North America, and as an activist writer for former PBS commentator Bill Moyers. He’s acted as partner and co-creative director at two New York and Connecticut based boutique advertising agencies, and takes pride in building these former businesses through the acquisition of major name clients, including: Black & Decker, British Airways, Cablevision, Coca-Cola USA, Canon USA, Delta Airlines, Denon, Manulife Financial, Marvel Comics, NASCAR, New York Flower Show, New York International Automobile Show, Six Flags Theme Parks, and Volvo North America. In 2007, he worked with Transportation Alternatives to create television commericals in support of Mayor Michael Bloomberg congestion pricing plan.

Richard is a 6th generation native New Yorker. Born in Manhattan, he is the great, great, great, nephew to Sir James Clarke Ross discoverer of the north magnetic pole and Antarctica's Ross Barrier, Sea, and Island. He is a published award-winning fine-art photographer, and a licensed NYC DCA Tour Guide.
